WomenSource speaker Tammy Washington gives strategies for success

A roomful of women think about achieving their goals and together shout “Nailed it!”

Author and motivational speaker Tammy Washington was the keynote speaker at Friday’s Motivating Women Luncheon, hosted by WomenSource, at the Quinlan Visual Arts Center. Washington is the author of the book “Nailed It!” which details several strategies for success.

“There is no secret to success,” Washington said. “People always ask me, but there is no secret to success. There is a strategy. There is a system to success.”

WomenSource chair Valerie Simmons-Walston said the event was an opportunity for some of the community’s busiest and most successful women to take an hour out of their day to sit back, mingle with each other and be motivated.

“It is our hope that you will leave here today inspired, motivated, empowered and equipped for success,” Simmons-Walston said.

Washington said her mission is to help women accomplish their goals, overcome the obstacles in their minds and move on to a new stage in their lives.

“We’re talking about your goals, the things you want to do and the things that are possibly holding you back,” she said.

Washington encouraged people to think of three categories of goals: personal, career and social contributions, or the impact they want to make on the world.

She said women always want people to see the progress they’ve made, but they don’t necessarily want people to see the process. She gave the example of making over one’s career or working hard to lose weight.

“A lot of times we get so focused on the goals, we forget to ask ourselves, ‘Well, how did you get here?’” she said. “And how are you going to get there?”

She encouraged women to reprogram their minds to believe they are capable of succeeding. She said the “Nailed it!” system she created is designed to help women become and believe in the person they want to be.

“I created the system because I wanted people to understand if there is something you want to be or something you want to have, you have to start being that first,” she said. “Once you start operating from a place of being empowered, you can start doing things you didn’t know you could accomplish.”

WomenSource board member Katie Dubnik said she was thrilled by the full house Friday and felt the event was a success.

“I feel like all the women hopefully left empowered and ready to face what may come their way and like they’ve ‘nailed it,’” Dubnik said. “…It was a great representation of the community and a packed out house, and hopefully it will just continue to grow and be like that each year.”
